Suggestions for the “Break Fast” Meal

After the twenty-four hour fast of Yom Kippur, it is customary to eat a dairy meal. Here are some of my favorite dishes for this special meal. You can find all the recipes on this website. Break Fast Herring

Submitted by Adrien for the Beyond Bubbe’s Kitchen Challenge. This is a great dish for a brunch or any dairy meal.

Her Story:

“My parents host a Break Fast every Yom Kippur with an inviting spread and good company that draws people regardless of whether they have spent the day in synagogue, at work, or at home and regardless of whether they have spent their day sinning, atoning, fasting, or eating.  This herring has been on the table for as long as I can remember. I’ve been told that my mother has been serving it at Break Fast for her entire adult life.  It has a distinctive smell that brings me back to the old world with a sense of security and familiarity that it will be on the table for years to come.  The menu changes each year yet the herring remains on the table.”

Ingredients:

2 16 oz. jars of herring with sour cream

Slice a bag of red radishes

Thinly slice a large red onion

Thinly slice 2 green peppers (no seeds)

Method:

  1. Combine in a big bowl and cover in the refrigerator overnight.
  2. Stir again before serving.
